Fusing Fun

Dragonfly ThreadsThis class is for all you folks who want to work with fusible web. For quilting, fusible can't be beat. Whether you're doing applique, surface effects or the whole quilt, this class will answer some of your basic questions about using fusible. We'll do a small project and discuss several different types of fusing. Nick will demonstrate fusing techniques, finishing, embellishment and even painting on fusible as well as the care and storage of fusible, both before and after they have been applied.

Supply List:

• Sewing Machine in good working order. You may do machine guided or free motion stitching. (optional, as this may be done at home.)
• 5 or 6 yards of Wonder Under fusible Web by Pellon (number 805)
• 6 to 10 Fat quarter size pieces of fabric. They don't all have to be 100% cotton, but they should all be washed to remove any finish from the fabric. They should sort of coordinate, but may be different weights, textures colors and contents. It makes it more fun that way.
• Craft size 100% Cotton bat
• Teflon Press sheet
• Small sharp scissors for fabric, paper scissors for fusible, and I like to use a small (I mean the really little) Rotory cutter, or exacto knife.
• Rotory cutting mat
• Decorative thread for quilting and using for the edge finish. (optional)
• Small amount yarn or other fiber for couching to the outside edge of the piece. This serves as a "binding"(optional)

Surface Design

Dragonfly ThreadsThis process based class is for those individuals that would like to add a few more tricks to their artistic bag. Well be going over the basics of surface design using fabric paint, dyes and inks. We'll cover creating and using stamps and stencils, mono printing, foiling and marbling (real and faux) should time permit. These techniques will allow you to add much more depth and richness to your work. Bring your sense of adventure and wear old clothes!

Supply List:

• 2 or 3 yards of 100% cotton fabric washed or PFD (prepared for dye) cut into 9"x11" pieces. (Wash first, Cut second...)
• Foil Sampler Pack available from Quilters studio. I will supply glue for the day. There are two types that I use and you can choose which works best for you.
• 1 Yard of wonder under or Misty fuse fusible web.
• Teflon Press sheet
• 1 yard of heavy vinyl, available at Quilters Studio. (Two people may share one yard as it is quite wide)
• 1 potato
• Small piece of Foam Core board (8.5 x 11 will be enough)
• Heavy string, cord, plastic wrap (just tear off a good size sheet and stuff it in your bag)
• One sheet of Mylar template plastic, small sheet of freezer paper (you don't need to bring the whole roll), 1 manila file folder
• Exacto Knife. (I will have several)
• Small cutting mat
• 505 or KK2000 spray adhesive
• Fabric paint of any kind for those of you who already have it. If not I will supply some for in class use. You only need Red, Blue and Yellow. I really like the Pebeo and the Jacquard brand paints which are also available at A Quilters Studio.
• Several Foam brushes in a couple of widths (available at Osh) and a container for water for rinsing brushes and stamps.

Thread Painting

Dragonfly ThreadsThis class is about creating one of a kind wall hangings, using thread, yarns, ribbons, fabric (really anything that can be stitched through!) and a little imagination!
If you have been putting off learning free motion stitching, now is a good time to put away that fear and come have a good time and leave with a little piece of art to boot! If you are already comfortable with FM, start your engines! Once the basics of this technique is learned, it can be used to create wonderful additions to quilts, garments, home dec. and a variety of mixed media pieces!

Supply List:

• A Sewing machine, that is in good working order,
which you are familiar with. You must be able to drop the feed dogs or cover them. Please bring a darning (embroidery) foot. You may also bring an Open toe foot.
• Basic sewing supplies.
• 1 to 2 yards of one of the following Sulky Fabri-Solvy, OESD Aqua Mesh, or Aqua mesh Plus, Aqua Bond, Aqua Magic or Aqua Magic Plus. Ultra Solvy, Romeo, or Badge Master may be used if you can't find the other types of water soluble stabilizer.
• 1 to 2 yards of Regular Solvy (light weight)
• Thread. Many of the threads used on this project will be visible on from both sides as this is a see through type project. Rayon, silk, and Polyester embroidery threads are great. I love metallic and Mylar (think sulky sliver or holo shimmer) for this project.
• Organza ribbon, decorative thread and fibers (think shiny, fluffy?) yarn, large metallic thread or cording. If you can sew through it and it will lay down semi flat, use it.
• Tulle Netting (bridal Illusion) 1 yard (optional) used as a backing for those wanting an especially "airy" look to their work.
• An embroidery sample or a large scale fabric motif for the focal point of the hanging, floral, fish, animal, etc. Computer printed photos and large scale upholstery prints work great!
• Extra fiber or yarn for couching around the outside, and tassels for the bottom corners if you want them.
• Extra bobbins.
• 505 or KK2000 adhesive spray.
• #80/12 or 90/14 embroidery or topstitch needles, based on the size of the thread you're using.
• A bottle of Sewers Aid
• A sense of adventure is also helpful!
